Along with the development and prevalence of Internet, data capacity increases quickly. When backbone network is gradually consummated, access network has become the bottleneck of service access. EPON(Ethernet Passive Optical Network), just like ATM-PON(ATM Passive Optical Network), is another new technology used to resolve user access network which has been paid widely attention. EPON has been considered one of the best solutions about access network because it is accordant with standard Ethernet which now is used widely in local access network. In EPON system, OLT(Optical Line Terminal) and ONU(Optical Network Unit) are the key parts. To good management and distribution of these components to ensure EPON network stability, efficient and accurate operation, providing an effective network management system is particularly important. In EPON technology standard IEEE 802.3ah, there is a clause about Operation, Administration and Maintenance, 0AM for short. This clause defines the network management function in data link layer. Then we can implement management combined with Simple Network Management Protocol in above layer. The main task of the paper is the implement SNMP agent for the EPON system.In this paper, the background and the situation both domestic and aboard of the research are analysed first, followed by the key concepts of EPON and relevant information about SNMP. Then, according the actual demands of network management, this paper gives the process of the designation about the private MIB of EPON network management system. After that, comes the entire process of developing the SNMP agent on Linux operating system. Finally, it is the function testing and result analysis of the proxy, to confirm the proxy's function of management and disposition to the network resource.
